The recording is very clean between the strum and the picking, that is why I suggest it. However, this tab was written without using one.

It's so great to see.Tabbed by: qweyet Gi I suggest a capo on the 2nd fret for clean playing. Look up all the funk festival lineups and just check out the bands that are out there driving the genre. But I'll tell ya right now man, what you might have in your mind as funk can definitely be expanded - especially with all the new shit coming out these days. I mean Adam Deitch and Jesus Coomes are literally writing books on modern funk at this point.Īnyway if you want some more info on any of these musicians/bands let me know. Next I think you've really never heard of Lettuce or Soulive so I beg you to check out this stuff and get a feel for the direction funk has been going these days. Here's an example of him crushing that new style with some great funk/jazz cats (including Chick - just wait for JM's solo) He actually developed these technique taking lessons from Charlie Hunter (an insane 7 string funk/fusion player this tune is more fusion than funk but trust me he's out there with Nikkie Glaspie and any other funk drummer you can think of ). Next JM has recently gotten more into a Jeff Beck finger picking style on the guitar, ditching his pick most of the time. Here is JM playing a truly awesome arrangement of Cissy Strut: Įven before this - JM has always been a funky jammer: He's played with George Porter and understands the style greatly. JM has a heavy influence from The Meters (they practically invented instrumental straight-ahead funk - if you haven't heard of em - then you have to check them out if you want any funk in your life). Not being sarcastic - I put some time in this so I hope you'll give it a shot. I also did some digging on this guy's YT channel (from OP's post), and low and behold I wasn't wrong when I said he was influenced by JM and loves his player!! So this is all talk but again, if you do enjoy funk, or music, or guitar - I'm gonna take some serious time to share some super sick shit with you. Steve Jordan and Pino Paladino are easily some of the best session musicians in the scene these days and it's not coincidence he picked two funk maistros to join him. But that's not funk obviously so how about the fact his band consists of two of the funkiest men alive right now. He's actually on tour with Phil Lesh and the Dead as Jerry Garcia - no vocals, he's only playing guitar. Oh boy - not sure if you're a big music/guitar guy but I've got some treats for you! First of all, John Mayer is definitely a pop-musician, not denying it - but he actually grew up a guitar player addicted to the blues and is now super well known in the guitar community. What would you call Soulive (link in my previous comment) or Lettuce? It's all about how the song is played - not whether or not the chords are b7 or 9 chords. Take a tune like "Povo" by Freddie Hubbard - the dude is a jazz musician and I'd say the needle on that tune is maybe on the jazzier side but look up some covers of it and you'll see it is as funk as funk gets. His is funky as shit - just cause he comps a lot don't mean it doesn't funk - specifically his rhythmic accents on those chords and syncopation on the cool diminished - that ain't no typical jazz comping. But even a band like Tauk gets billed as funk so meh - I think the fairest and easiest term is funk.Ĭheck this out - on mobile so can't link right now but look up "Sunny" by Bobby Hebb (original soul tune) - then look up Sunny with John Scofield and Joey Defrancesco (jazz) and then listen to this guy's version again.

If you ask me - I'd say we are mostly instrumental rock-funk. Also jazz specific venues refuse to book us haha. All the venues we've ever played bill us as "funk" (even the ones that don't have our info/bio just music), the only blogs and press we've gotten are from funk blogs, and our fans describe us as psychedelic spacefunk.
